Swiss Exhibits Dominate ROMPEX 2004
AHPS members won both the multi-frame and single-frame grand awards at ROMPEX near Denver during the society’s May 14-16 national convention, repeating their performance at BALPEX last September.
► Ralph Soderberg’s 10 frames of Standing Helvetia earned, in addition to the show grand award, the AHPS grand award, the APS pre-1900 medal and a show gold. He retired the cur-rent Felix Ganz Memorial Grand Award plaque, winning it for the third time.
► Harlan Stone’s one frame of Sitting Helvetia proofs and specimens captured, in addition to the show grand, the AHPS best one-frame award and a show platinum.
► For multi-frame exhibits, the AHPS gold medal and a show gold went to Steve Turchik for Strubels, the AHPS silver and a show gold to Harlan Stone for postal envelopes, and the AHPS bronze, a show gold and the Postal History Society medal to Charles LaBlonde for Swiss World War II mail to Great Britain, Canada and the U.S.A.
► Roger Heath, a first-time exhibitor, won a show vermeil and three novice awards from AHPS, AAPE and the show for DeCoppet Razor Cancels.
► Other winners in the multi-frame compe-tition were Bruce Marsden, show vermeil and AAPE merit award for Swiss Fondue; Ernest Bergman, show vermeil for Switzerland’s Civil-ian Refugees and Military Internees during Nazi Era; Richard Barton, show vermeil for William Tell; and Robert Kinsley, show vermeil for Swit-zerland during Two World Wars. Bernhard Glutz, a visiting exhibitor from Switzerland, won a show silver for 1941 Historic Portraits.
► Other winners in the one-frame category were George Struble, a show platinum for 1913 Flugspende Flights, and Bruce Marsden, a show silver for 1949 40-Centime Basel Docks Issue.
